Much of my online life for the past month or so was spent on reading up on a lot of current events and political opinions and pieces. It’s because I’ve obviously been bitten with the 2010 Presidential Elections fever.
But the thing is, it actually stresses me out!
Politics has never been one of my favorite topics. Although I am mostly updated with the major news headlines and might share in the public outrage with whatever recent injustice is out there, debating about politics is something I’d rather not engage in. Firstly, it’s because I admit I don’t have a deeper understanding of what goes on and what the repercussions are for us or for the country. Secondly, defending my political opinion requires intellectual sophistication compared to deliberating my showbiz or entertainment rants and raves, haha! I would much rather enjoy nitpicking on local or foreign entertainment issues. Doing that in political issues unarmed with a lot of facts is just idiotic.
Having said that, I’ve managed to engage in two online discussions about politics in the past month. One is over a forum and the other one is over a mailing list. The latter was quite more enlightening for me because it allowed me to learn from older and most definitely wiser people. But in the former, someone accused me of not doing my homework and for that branded me ‘nakakahiya’, haha! And it’s all because I didn’t happen to share his opinion (which was totally biased by the way!).
But the thing is, the current state of our country and society requires such in depth rumination from all of us, especially those who will vote in next year’s elections. I believe it’s actually our job to be in-the-know. It’s not fair to just decide whether we like a candidate or not based on our whims.
So for now, I will most definitely visit Inquirer more than the Philippine Entertainment Portal. I know that I like being updated on entertainment news but with all the political jokes running for office, following Philippine politics can be just as entertaining.
