Movie #33: The Woman In Black

Watched it last: May 31
Released last: February 2012
Why I watched it: Why, because of Harry Potter, of course! Haha!

The thing about career-changing roles is that when you play other characters, people will always see in you the character you are most well known as. Jules Cobb in Cougar Town will always be Monica Gellar to me. And Jennifer Aniston, oh Jennifer Aniston – you will always be Rachel Karen Green to me. Haha!

But back to Harry Potter’s latest movie!

Here’s the thing about this movie, it is not Harry Potter’s movie at all. There were still traces, I suppose (the British accents and robes don’t really dispel the Hogwarts feel, haha), but for the most part, I was watching Daniel Radcliffe’s Arthur Kipps struggle it out with the woman in black.

“Insidious” was the scariest movie I watched in recent memory, and this movie will share that honor. A good horror movie for me is not the one that makes me cringe over all the blood and gore. It is the one that plays to the human psyche that fears the unknown by default. More often than not, what is scary is just imagined and this movie made me imagine scary things indeed. Haha! I’m sure my roommate will even attest that I even suddenly screamed at one point in the movie.

Critical Reception: 65 on Rotten Tomatoes.
I'd rate it around: 75%. HP fans, you will be delighted to know that your Daniel Radcliffe has truly grown as an actor.
_______________
As I did in 2011, I am listing down the movies I watch for 2012, along with my comment about each viewing experience. These movie pseudo-review/commentaries are hardly scientific. There might be days that I might be more tolerant of crappy movies and so I might find myself going easy on the critique. More so, my "critiques" are hardly theoretical because I admit I have not taken any proper film critiquing classes, haha! I most usually lash out "in the moment". I try to be as objective as possible, but know that we all have our own different tastes when it comes to films.
