Movie #37 - Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

Watched it last: June 23
Released last: June 2012
Why I watched it: We were a group and I really wanted to watch Rock of Ages, but I was outvoted. Plus, the birthday boy voted for this, so I had to relent. Haha!

One reason why I didn’t watch this is that I feel like I’ve outgrown the story. The original Madagascar storyline was hilarious even for adults, but when producers milk the plots of such successful movies the result is usually not as exemplary.

I wouldn’t rate the third installment high in terms of plausibility. But then again, given the characters, plausibility should not even be a criteria. It is meant to be implausible after all. Haha! But some plot details were just too ridiculous or illogical. For example, Alex and the gang were able to swim from Africa all the way to the Mediterranean. If you know your geography, you would know that if they were able to pull off Africa-Europe distance, then swimming to across the Atlantic wouldn’t be so hard. In fact, had they swam straight from Africa to America themselves, the distance would have been shorter. So really, they didn’t need the help of the penguins. But then again, I’m just digressing here. Haha!

In short, I had to really, really exert extra effort in my suspension of disbelief for the movie. But hey, it paid off because I actually enjoyed it. Haha! Things were so ridiculous, but they were still quite funny. All in all, the movie served its purpose – it entertained. But I hope there will be no more Madagascar 4 because really, how else would they be able to stretch this story out?!

Critical Reception: 75% on Rotten Tomatoes
I’d rate it around: 67%, I’m still hesitant to admit that I enjoyed it.
_______________
As I did in 2011, I am listing down the movies I watch for 2012, along with my comment about each viewing experience. These movie pseudo-review/commentaries are hardly scientific. There might be days that I might be more tolerant of crappy movies and so I might find myself going easy on the critique. More so, my "critiques" are hardly theoretical because I admit I have not taken any proper film critiquing classes, haha! I most usually lash out "in the moment". I try to be as objective as possible, but know that we all have our own different tastes when it comes to films.
