Movie #82 - People Like Us

Watched it last: November 27
Released last: June 2012
Why I watched it: Random YouTube movie trailer surfing. I like Chris Pine and the purple lady from The Hunger Games is here (Elizabeth Banks). Haha!

Off the bat, I appreciated that this movie was not a romantic drama movie. It’s been a while since I’ve watched a normal family drama. I miss “Brothers & Sisters”!

Anyway, I couldn’t say I can relate to the story, but somehow, I get it.

I get how it is to be distant from one’s folks. I get how one would rather run away instead of facing things head on. I get how one has to make difficult choices and won’t ever find the peace to live with it. I get how we resort to extreme risks in order to protect the best interests of our loved ones.

But if there’s one thing that the movie has reinforced in me, it is the value of honesty. Yes, we all have secrets. Some harmless, many self-preserving. I will not be a hypocrite and say that I don’t have my fair share of selfish secrets. Who knows, some of these secrets of mine will bite my ass someday. Maybe they won’t and stay hidden. Haha! There will always be a time for the truth and when that time comes, we must not get in the way.

At first, I didn’t get shy the movie was titled as such. I mean, it wasn’t really an everyman’s story. But I suppose in a way, the story touched on many different aspects and kinds of family complications. So in the totality of things, the characters were really people like all of us.

Critical Reception: 57% on Rotten Tomatoes
I’d rate it around: 80%. I’m a sucker for these kinds of family dramas.

As I did in 2011, I am listing down the movies I watch for 2012, along with my comment about each viewing experience. These movie pseudo-review/commentaries are hardly scientific. There might be days that I might be more tolerant of crappy movies and so I might find myself going easy on the critique. More so, my "critiques" are hardly theoretical because I admit I have not taken any proper film critiquing classes, haha! I most usually lash out "in the moment". I try to be as objective as possible, but know that we all have our own different tastes when it comes to films.
