Movie #88 - The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Watched it last: December 26
Released last: September 2012
Why I watched it: Many friends raved about it back in September, and of course, I wanted to see Emma Watson in action again.

The movie was just, uhm, “tagos”. Haha! I can’t think of an English word that truly and fully encompasses the meaning of “tagos” or “pasok na pasok sa banga”! In terms of both story and acting, the movie is such a winner.

Logan Lerman has come a long way from being Percy Jackson. The depth probably just comes with the role, but not all young actors can rise to the challenge the way he did.

Emma Watson was sooooo beautiful. Her short ‘do was really flattering. But more than that, her portrayal was such a revelation because there was no hint of Hermione Granger in her performance. She was really able to veer away from the epic role that made her bolstered her to super stardom – something that  Jennifer Aniston and practically everyone from the sitcom “Friends” has struggled with. Haha!

I haven’t read the bestselling book yet, but the movie has definitely made me include the book version in my reading queue. I especially loved how Charlie wasn’t the perfectly lovable character. He has his fair share of mistakes and that he possesses a shade of inner darkness, just like everyone else. The rest of the ‘wallflowers’ could have easily been run-of-the-mill, but they each had their own unique nuances.

I think most people will be able to identify because most people are wallflowers. I mean, in a society that puts too much premium on stand outs, the rest would have to be relegated to the wallflower roles, right?  But therein lies the charm of the story – you will know how it feels. You will know how to deal not only with the everyday struggles but also with the ultimate one which is finding a your place in the huge crowd.

Critical Reception: 87% on Rotten Tomatoes
I’d rate it around: 98%. "Charlie, we accept the love we think we deserve"  – that’s my favourite quote from the movie. #TagosTalaga
_______________
As I did in 2011, I am listing down the movies I watch for 2012, along with my comment about each viewing experience. These movie pseudo-review/commentaries are hardly scientific. There might be days that I might be more tolerant of crappy movies and so I might find myself going easy on the critique. More so, my "critiques" are hardly theoretical because I admit I have not taken any proper film critiquing classes, haha! I most usually lash out "in the moment". I try to be as objective as possible, but know that we all have our own different tastes when it comes to films.
