Watched it last: July 14
Released last: July 2008
Why I watched it: Our company will hold a movie night for The Dark Knight Rises. Even though friends said I wouldn’t get lost even as I haven’t watched the first 2 Batman movies, I wanted to anyway. I’ve already watched the first one, it’s time to watch the second instalment.
Now this one was definitely more engaging, interesting and exciting than Batman Begins – despite the fact that in essence, it just continued the dark theme of the first one. It’s like a different creative team is behind the sequel.
Heath Ledger as the Joker was probably the best performance of his life. Indeed, he performed like it was his last. He was such a formidable foe. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart are welcome additions to the cast. Well, technically, Miss Gyllenhaal was just a replacement for Katie Holmes. And while she may not be as dashingly beautiful as Miss Holmes, she more than made for it with her thespian prowess.
This one totally benefited from the extensive character development in the first movie. I got to know Bruce Wayne more and somehow, my initial repulsion to his “dark” spoiled brat character transformed into admiration and respect. And as he faced a much more daunting task in this movie, I actually rooted for him.
Critical Reception: 94% on Rotten Tomatoes
I’d rate it around: 89%. Now this one deserved the hype, no doubt about it.
_______________
As I did in 2011, I am listing down the movies I watch for 2012, along with my comment about each viewing experience. These movie pseudo-review/commentaries are hardly scientific. There might be days that I might be more tolerant of crappy movies and so I might find myself going easy on the critique. More so, my "critiques" are hardly theoretical because I admit I have not taken any proper film critiquing classes, haha! I most usually lash out "in the moment". I try to be as objective as possible, but know that we all have our own different tastes when it comes to films.
