This time back in 2010, I already claimed my 2011 Starbucks planner. That was my all-time quick record. I also didn't spend much on that planner because bulk of my stickers were from friends and classmates who I persuaded to have overpriced signature coffee and let me have the stickers.
This year, two whole weeks into the promo, I only still have 5 stickers, two of which were donated by friends. They relented in going to Starbucks instead of trying out the other cafés in SM City Clark just so I could collect more stickers (real friends they are, I tell ya!).
I'm only at 5 stickers and that is okay. It really is. I will not go on and rant about how the cost of obtaining the planner can be better spent on more important stuff (come on, it really is). I know I have the hipster tendency. But I am having this written introspection because me not actively procuring the stickers is a big thing, haha!
I don't even remember how I was first beguiled into collecting stickers. I was only a still student then, thus, shelling out more than 2,000 pesos for a planner definitely fell under the category of financial excess. But I knew I just had to get it. I admit, it made me feel "sosyal". I could've gotten planners from National Bookstore. But no, I had to get the one from Starbucks. I was shallow that way.
I did it year after year, until I realized, I wasn't even using the planner the way I should use a planner. And then I eventually owned a smartphone with nifty Calendar and Notes apps. It became a chore to have to backtrack and record what happened during the week, just so I could have something on my planner. It just wasn't worth it anymore to get coffee more than I normally have to just so I can get a planner that I will not use the way I should. I guess I've just outgrown the annual tradition. After all, almost everyone collects these days! Where's the cool in doing what everyone does? Now there's the hipster talking! Haha!
I still go to Starbucks. I actually collect stickers for friends. Besides, great coffees are expensive for a reason. When one buys Starbucks, one pays for the ambiance as well. That is how it works. To think otherwise would be pretentious. But I enjoy my overpriced Raspberry Caramel Frappucino as much as I enjoy the two sachets of Blend 45 Puti that perks me up every morning at work. It's only 6 pesos per sachet at 7-Eleven. And you get to collect points if you have an Everyday Rewards card. =P
