Released last: February 2012 Why I watched it: Ryan Reynolds. What a hunk. HAHA! Kidding aside, although I prefer watching Ryan Reynolds in his comedy or rom-com roles, he did deliver in his serious dramatic role in Buried. It’s always interesting to watch bankable actors in offbeat roles.
This may have been an action movie, but Ryan Reynolds wasn’t exactly a dashing man of the law here. His character wasn’t such a wimp either, but he more than willing to prove his worth to his superiors. And in the end, I think he did exactly just that – and even pulled a fast one on them.
CIA lead characters in movies and TV series are a dime a dozen, and their struggle when it comes to work-life balance is almost always explored. Also, it’s not often that you see a secret agent character that had a successful personal life. So in a sad kind of way, what Ryan Reynold’s character did to handle his situation in the story was actually quite romantically gallant. Well, at least for me. And my, what a quandary in the end, huh? If it were me, I would like to believe that I would do the same righteous thing, but the thing is, it’s really hard to tell when you are really faced with that kind of choice. And it is in situations like this that really puts a spotlight on the importance of truth and one’s integrity.
Anyway, the plot wasn’t all that original or impressive. When you have an action thriller involving one of the more secretive arms of the US government, betrayal and controversy of international proportions will obviously be the ultimate driving ingredient for the working plot. It was not lacking in action though, it just was a familiar rollercoaster ride.
Critical Reception: 54% on Rotten Tomatoes
I'd rate it around: 65%

As I did in 2011, I am listing down the movies I watch for 2012, along with my comment about each viewing experience. These movie pseudo-review/commentaries are hardly scientific. There might be days that I might be more tolerant of crappy movies and so I might find myself going easy on the critique. More so, my "critiques" are hardly theoretical because I admit I have not taken any proper film critiquing classes, haha! I most usually lash out "in the moment". I try to be as objective as possible, but know that we all have our own different tastes when it comes to films.
