Movie #89 - 10 Years

Watched it last: December 27
Released last: September 2012
Why I watched it: I was really in the mood for reunion movies, haha!

It was an ensemble cast after all and so the sub-stories felt a little too disjoint. I liked how each character had its own “weary pasts” to relive, but in the end, it didn’t really come together.

The major story arc involving the leads Channing Tatum and his real-life wife Jenna Dewan was truly the highlight of the movie. I appreciated how it wasn’t your standard-issue reunion romcom ending. There are instances where people just need closure and do not necessarily want to relive the past. But yeah, in real life as well, the need for closure is often used as an excuse to briefly relive the past because their present has become too routinary and boring, haha!

And after a string of movies about reunion and high school, I realized that in general, we are weary of our past. Sometimes, there’s unfinished business that does need closure. Or we’ve become so different that we wonder if we like the stark change that has happened. But often, it’s really just the memory of the happiness that we once felt that resurfaces in our consciousness. Reunions really have that catalyzing effect – we take a pause and look back. Sometimes we like what we see, sometimes we don’t.

Critical Reception: 60% on Rotten Tomatoes
I’d rate it around: 63%. Not all characters were that interesting or endearing.
_______________
As I did in 2011, I am listing down the movies I watch for 2012, along with my comment about each viewing experience. These movie pseudo-review/commentaries are hardly scientific. There might be days that I might be more tolerant of crappy movies and so I might find myself going easy on the critique. More so, my "critiques" are hardly theoretical because I admit I have not taken any proper film critiquing classes, haha! I most usually lash out "in the moment". I try to be as objective as possible, but know that we all have our own different tastes when it comes to films.
